Truman's Little White House On Video

Anyone in love with Key West's beautiful historic homes has probably visited the Little White House. But if you aren't lucky enough to have traveled to Key West, this video will give you an inside look at Harry Truman's beloved retreat.

The Little White House was built in 1890 on the waterfront as a duplex to house the base commander and paymaster - and served in the Spanish American war as command headquarters. The house is no longer waterfront, though as the harbor was dredged in 1909 to accommodate the Navy’s larger fleet. In 1911 it was converted to a single family dwelling.

In addition to its most famous resident, Harry S Truman, it was a home for
Scientist Edward Hayden, who served as base commander from 1912 to 1915 and was involved in hurricane research. Later, inventor Thomas Edison resided in the historic home for six months in 1981 while developing new weapons for the war effort.
